If you’ve been spending a lot of time thinking and planning about how you can improve your overall health, you’ve probably heard the term “macros” floating around. A lot of folks know that macros relate to diet and nutrition but don’t fully understand how. We’re here to help! Here is a quick overview…

Macros are actually short for macronutrients. These are the nutrients that your body needs in large amounts for it to function at its best. Macronutrients are broken down into three categories: carbohydrates, proteins and fats.

It is crucial that you provide your body with an adequate amount of each nutrient to keep you feeling and functioning at your best.
The USDA recommends the following breakdown:

Carbs: 45–65% of your daily calories
Protein: 10–35% of your daily calories
Fat: 20–35% of your daily calories

This of course will vary depending on goals, activity levels and lots of other factors! It is always a good idea to reach out to a professional to help guide you along the way!

It is important to remember that each macronutrient provides an important role in your body’s function! Severely restricting or eliminating a macronutrient may (or may not!) provide an easy way to reaching certain goals, this is almost always incredibly difficult to maintain and will not be a sustainable solution.

Practicing balance and being attentive to your own body’s hunger cues will help you in the long run as you create a wellness routine that works for you!
